Q5 3.1 Laminated IPS
This is the install guide for Game Boy DMG Q5 3.1" Laminated IPS LCD Backlight Kit with OSD - Hispeedido.
Getting Started
This kit requires you to solder the two speaker contacts.
Required Tool and Parts
Tweezers
J1 (Japanese Industrial Standard) Screwdriver
Y1 Tri-point screwdriver
Soldering Equipment
Prerequisite Steps
Follow our Disassembly Guide.
Leave the main board in the rear housing. Removal is unnecessary.
Test before installation! When you receive a backlight/LCD kit, you should perform a dry run before installing to assure that nothing has been damaged in transit. A dry run or test fit means the kit is not installed in the shell. This includes the use of adhesives, brackets, and any performed soldering. All ribbon cables should have no bends or creases in them. If you are unsure how to perform a dry run, please contact our support team and we will be happy to help. Backlight kits that have been installed are not eligible for replacement or return.
LCD may break if put under too much pressure or dropped. Please exercise extreme caution when installing.
You do not need to purchase a separate lens. Removing pre-adhered lens from LCD can result in damage to the LCD and will void product warranty. If you received an extra lens in your order, this was likely a included plastic lens with a shell and should NOT be placed on top of the pre-adhered lens.
Recommended setup for dry test
Shell Modifications
We highly recommend purchasing the pre-cut shells from Hispeedido to avoid pressure issues caused by trimming the shell yourself. As per our policy, once an LCD kit has been installed, it no longer qualifies for replacements. Use the non-recommend shell at your own risk.
If you have purchased one of the shells recommended above, you can skip these shell modification steps. However, you may need to complete contrast wheel modifications. Non-recommended shell modifications:
If fitment issues are noted/console is closing too tight, optional step to trim this area:
Installation
Next up is the soldering of the speaker wires, polarity does not matter. Solder your speaker to the new IPS control board as shown.
Drop your new button PCB on top of the display and connect your ribbon cable before screwing the board down
Note: For the small ribbon, make sure the blue tab on each end of the small ribbon is facing up in the small PCB port and the large PCB port. The large ribbon will be pin side up when inserted into the front PCB and into the motherboard.
If your contrast wheel is still sticking and binding, then you should trim down these through hole pins. Trim them and then reflow them to ensure there is no extra height above the board. You may also want to perform the shell modifications in the contrast wheel area mentioned above.
Install the 6 PH1 screws to hold the IPS control board in place.
Install the larger ribbon cable on the IPS board. This is a pressure-fit connector; some gentle force may be required to properly seat the cable.
Connect the IPS control board assembly to the main board via the larger end of the ribbon cable.
Replace the 6 Y1 screws on the rear housing and seal the console up. All done!
